The A1 Ethniki (Greek: Α1 Εθνική Κατηγορία), often referred to as the Greek Volleyball League, is the highest professional volleyball league in Greece. It is run by the Hellenic Volleyball Federation. It is considered one of the top national leagues in European volleyball, as its clubs have made significant success in European competitions.
History
It was first organized in 1928 as a Panhellenic Championship. In the 1968–69 season, the men's Alpha Ethniki category was created at the men's level, which from 1990–91 to 2009–10 was named A1.
Griekenland - A1 is de hoogste volleybalcompetitie in Griekenland. De competitie bestaat uit twaalf teams die een thuis- en uitwedstrijd tegen elkaar spelen. De beste acht teams plaatsen zich voor de play-offs, waarin wordt gestreden om de Griekse landstitel.
De A1 is een van de sterkste competities in Europa en heeft een aantal topclubs voortgebracht, zoals Olympiacos Piraeus, PAOK Thessaloniki en AEK Athene. In de A1 spelen ook een aantal Nederlandse spelers, zoals Nimir Abdelaziz en Robin Overbeeke.
De Griekse landstitel is een van de meest begeerde prijzen in het Griekse volleybal. De winnaar van de A1 plaatst zich voor de Champions League, het belangrijkste clubtoernooi in Europa.
